The Speech and Language Therapy (SLT) Department offers both undergraduate and graduate education and aims to promote the science of speech therapy through teaching, research and preparation of the graduates with the skills that enable them to successfully treat people with communication disorders.
The mission of the Department is to a) train students on the application of biological and physical sciences for assessing human communication (speech, language and voice) and swallow, as well as the prevention, treatment and scientific research of disorders associated with them, b) provide, via the clinical training, services in diagnosis and treatment of human communication and swallow disorders seen in children and adults - schools, kindergartens, hospitals and other institutions, as well as at the Department ‘s clinic, and c) advance scientific research on issues related to language, voice, speech and their disorders.
The Department operates with a modern curriculum. Besides the theoretical part, it includes mandatory clinical practice of 900 hours, carried out in hospitals, special education schools, institutions and in the Clinic of the Department, under the supervision of faculty members.
The Department has established the following research laboratories:
- Speech, Voice & Augmentative Alternative Communication Technology Laboratory - INTERACT
- Laboratory of Theoretical and Experimental Linguistics - Typical Development and Disorders – LINGSTRUCTURE
Of the main advantages of the Department is the long educational experience of its faculty, their professional experience in the field of speech and language therapy, and the research being conducted on the characteristics of Greek in non-typical populations. This is a combination of factors that ensures the complete practical training of the students and their success in entering the professional market or pursuing graduate studies.
The graduates of the Speech and Language Therapy Departments of the Schools of Health and Social Welfare Professions of the Technological Educational Institutes are awarded the professional title of «Speech & Language Therapist» and work autonomously or in cooperation in the private or public sector.
As of Spring 2016, the Department co-organizes and operates within the School of Health and Welfare Professions the Master’s Program in «Rehabilitation Sciences», with specialization in Speech and Language Therapy, Nursing and Physiotherapy.
